Abnormal or maladaptive behavior is largely perceived as behavior that violates a norm in a given society. Therefore maladaptive is considered within the context of the culture and environment; and is causing the individual distress in their daily life’s functioning. Persons displaying maladaptive behaviours are classified as having a mental illness/disorder
Common Myths about Abnormal Behaviour
Ø It is easily recognized as deviant
Ø It is incurable
Ø The individuals are weak
Ø Individuals are unable to play a part in society
Ø Individuals are always dangerous
Stigma and Maladaptive Behaviour
Unfortunately, stigma and discrimination can add to the challenges that individuals displaying abnormal behaviour experience. Several social movements have been working to increase societal awareness and understanding of mental illness and challenge the issue of social exclusion.
