The fear of being victims of crime is causing depression among many from all strata of society. Older people fear being victims of crimes on the streets, in the banks and public transport. Parents fear for their children as they go out to work, school, church and social events. Females have a greater fear of physical and sexual assault, and human trafficking. Males fear losing their lives due to family members’ involvement in crime. People of the upper strata of society fear being robbed and murdered while those of the lower strata fear gang violence, extortion, and reprisals.
Many persons are mentally enslaved due to fear and tend to remain shut behind their doors. When some are out on the streets they are filled with anxiety and even experience panic attacks. The vicious actions of crime have left persons in a state of despair. Some are thinking of immigrating to countries that have minimal crime rates. This level of fear can cause mental instability.
